About General
General
TM 6.0 is the latest version of the most popular Business Basic
report writer. Since 1987, when General was first released, thousands
of BBx and ProvideX users have used General for report writing, data
export, and analysis. No other report writing product combines the
rich feature set with fast, native Business Basic file access. General
is the most powerful and flexible report writer available for the
Business Basic market.
Version 6.0 adds functionality, and for the first time adds a graphical
client that works on any Microsoft Windows 98 or higher PC. General
still operates on the same server where the BBx or ProvideX data is stored,
and still offers a traditional character mode interface, but now adds
client-server technology and a full-featured GUI interface.
As in all
previous releases, the General server and character mode interface runs
on any Unix, Linux, or Windows server, where your Business Basic application
and files reside. The GUI client is Windows-based, connecting to the
server over your network to execute reports and retrieve results.
With this new architecture, and the many new features and capabilities
in both the user interface and in report writing and data dictionary
support, General has re-affirmed its position as the premier report
writer for the Business Basic marketplace.
Significant features of General 6.0 include:
Multiple Interfaces |
Compatible graphical and character-mode interfaces, and within
each interface, multiple report writing modes, from direct command
entry to visual designing with drag and drop.
|
Dictionary Support |
General includes a powerful internal dictionary with support for
data extraction, calculations, file linking, key and file-based
sorting, and automatic range and criteria specification for supporting
non-normalized data. Calculations can include compound statements, and
calls to external Business Basic programs.
In addition, General supports both the Basis Data Dictionary and two
Providex data dictionary formats: providex.ddf and .ini file. Files
defined in these external formats can be supplemented with information
in General's internal format.
|
Linking |
Links are supported in one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-one structures.
With one-to-many linking, General can also sum, average, or count the
related records. Links can be defined via primary or secondary keys,
or via sort files.
|
Layout |
General supports row layouts from 1 to 99 lines deep, and column
positions from 1 to 255. Up to nine break point and sort levels
can be defined, and each break point supports any combination of
total, average, count, maximum, minimum, and percent-of-total
aggregates.
|
Exporting |
General can export report data directly into Excel, or the report
itself into PDF format, via the graphical client. It can also export
directly from the character mode into Excel when used in conjunction
with sdOffice or local DDE.
Text export formats include delimited, fixed, and DIF.
|
Security |
Access to General is controlled with a login procedure. User codes
are granted an access level, which in turn grants access to the files
used by any report, and also to run-only and edit modes for report
designs.
|
General 6.0 is available for PRO/5 2.2 and above, Visual PRO/5 2.2 and above,
and ProvideX 5.0 and above. Earlier versions of PRO/5 can run
the character mode version of the program, and Providex 4.x can run both
character and graphical modes with limited dictionary sizes.
